Gophers top recruit Gray currently off team
The four-star quarterback is off the team for the time being because of an NCAA Eligibility issue.
Gophers football recruit MarQueis Gray is not currently with the team because of eligibility issues, the team announced Monday.
Gray, a quarterback from Indianapolis, was generally regarded as Minnesota's top recruit of 2008, being named the top player to come out of Indiana by Rivals.com and garnering offers from seven other Big Ten schools, including Ohio State.
"MarQueis Gray is not with us at this time due to an NCAA Eligibility Center issue," said head coach Tim Brewster, who, according toe the University, will have no further comment until the situation is resolved. "We're hopeful, for MarQueis' sake, that this issue will be resolved."
According to a report in the Star Tribune, Gray's "eligibility questions reportedly center around his college entrance exam scores."
Continued the Star Tribune report, "Gray's ACT college test scores were reportedly flagged by the ACT, which looks for potential irregularities in test scores. ACT spokesperson Ed Colby said he cannot talk about specific student scores, but said only a 'small percentage' of test scores are flagged. Colby said students who have their scores flagged are offered two options: offer evidence validating the score, or re-take the test."
Brewster said during fall practice that the team was debating whether or not to redshirt the talented true freshman, who would've challenged for the backup quarterback spot.
Gray's mother, Alicia, said she believes MarQueis will play for the Gophers, but that "it's up to the University" whether or not he will play this season.
"He's looking forward to playing," Alicia Gray told the Star Tribune. "He will be playing for the university."
